COAERS Retirees Who have Returned to Work with the City of Austin

The City of Austin passed a resolution this year providing all temporary employees access to earned sick leave.  As a COAERS retiree who has returned to work, we wanted you to know how these new rules may affect you.

As you may recall, our statutes allow retirees to work for the City of Austin in non regular full-time positions for no more than 1,508 hours in any rolling 12-month period.  COAERS monitors the hours that you work, and are paid for, each pay period to ensure that you have not worked more than 1,508 hours in the preceding 12 months.  If you use earned sick leave, that sick leave time counts towards the 1,508 hour limit.

For example, if you are scheduled to work 58 hours this pay period, but work only 50 hours and use 8 hours of sick leave, all 58 hours count towards the 1,508 hour limit.  The reason is that COAERS’ statutes state that all of the hours that you work or that you are paid for count towards the limit.
