Volunteers Needed for Nominating and Election Committee
We are currently searching for volunteers to serve on the
COAERS Nominating and Election Committee which will
oversee this fall’s election of two active members to fill Places
#8 and #9 on the COAERS Board of Trustees. The Committee
will develop the election ballot and determine the results of the
election. Volunteers will meet once in June then three or four
times in the fall of 2013.
This year’s election will be held from mid-October to early
December. Currently, Place #8 is held by Chris Noak and Place
#9 is held by Jim Williams. Their terms expire December 2013.
The new term will begin January 2014 and continue through
December 2017.
The Nominating and Election Committee serves an important
function. Committee members ensure that our election is fair
and runs smoothly. Th ose wishing to volunteer should contact
Ms. Jo Anne Norton by telephone at (512) 458-2551 ext. 130
or by email at joanne.norton@coaers.org.
Determining Final Average Pay
One of the key components in determining your retirement benefit from COAERS is final average pay. We wanted to take this opportunity to provide our membership with more information about this topic. We would like to thank a few of our members for making us aware that the topic wasn't adequately covered in our Handbook. Here's a brief description of how your pay plays a part in your retirement benefit.
The pay that COAERS uses to determine your retirement benefit is base pay. More specifically, your hourly rate for a normal 80-hour pay period is used. This means that your retirement benefit is not based upon overtime or other types of pay that you might receive. At retirement, your final average pay is determined by averaging the highest 36 months of base pay out of the last 120 months of base pay prior to your retirement date.
Final average pay is then multiplied by your total service credit then multiplied by either 3% for Group A members or 2.5% for Group B members to determine your lifetime monthly retirement benefit.
If you are close to retirement eligibility, you will want to obtain an estimate of your retirement benefits, which includes details about the calculation of final average pay. To obtain an estimate, click on the "Forms" tab above, then click on "Request for Retirement Benefit Estimate". Complete the form and send it to us.
