2018 Annual Members' Meeting

On July 17th, COAERS held its Annual Members’ Meeting, where COAERS’ members received an organizational update. Speakers included COAERS’ Actuary, Mr. Lewis Ward, Chief Investment Officer Mr. David Veal and Executive Director Mr. Christopher Hanson. Retiree Volunteers Needed for Nominating and Election Committee

We are currently searching for retirees to volunteer to serve on the COAERS Nominating and Election Committee, which will oversee this fall's election for Retired Member Place #11 on the COAERS Board of Trustees. The Committee will develop the ballot and certify the results of the election. The Committee will meet once in June and then three or four times in the fall of 2018.

The Texas Public Policy Foundation and the Reason Foundation published a report on the City of Austin Employees’ Retirement System (COAERS) entitled “Evaluating Solutions for Austin’s Billion Dollar Pension Crisis”. IRS Makes Withholding Calculator Available

The IRS is encouraging taxpayers to use a withholding calculator on their website, located here. The calculator helps you determine if you are having the right amount of tax withheld from your monthly benefit payment. Checking your withholding now can prevent you from having unexpected taxes due when you file your taxes next year.

New Board of Trustee Appointees

March 21, 2018

New citizen members have been appointed to the COAERS Board of Trustees. Citizen Place 5, which was previously held by Mr. Reagan David, has now been filled by Mr. Randy Spencer, who was sworn in at the January 30, 2018 Board meeting. The Citizen Place 3 City Council Appointee has been filled by Ms. Stephanie Beach. The City Council appointed her at their February 1, 2018 council meeting. Also, current Citizen Board Member for Place 4, Mr. Frank Merriman, was re-appointed by the City Council to another four-year term.

Board Certifies Election for Active Board Place 7

February 07, 2018

The Nominating and Election Committee met on January 19, 2018 to tabulate the ballots for the Active Member Special Election for Place 7. The Board certified the election at their January 30, 2018 Board Meeting. Amy Hunter was elected with 279 votes cast. There were also four write-in candidates with one vote each. The response rate was 3.1%. The Nominating and Election Committee was commended for their dedication to this important process.

Tax Forms for Retirees (1099-R)

January 25, 2018

If you received a payment from COAERS during 2017, either as a retiree, terminated member, or beneficiary, you were mailed a 1099-R for your 2017 tax return. Form 1099-R, which reports your taxable pension earnings for the 2017 tax year, was mailed to the address on file with COAERS. The Form 1099-R provides information you will need to complete your tax return. Allow some time for the Form 1099-R to reach your mailbox, and if you haven't received it by February 16, 2018, then call us at 512-458-2551 and ask for a reprint.
